  Chief Electoral Officer orders writ for new Akulliq By-election



RANKIN INLET, Nunavut (January 23, 2009) – Late this afternoon Chief Electoral Officer Sandy Kusugak ordered the returning officer for Akulliq to issue the writ for a by-election on Monday January 26. The by-election will take place in Repulse Bay and Kugaaruk on March 2, 2009.



Returning Officer Romeo Kopak of Repulse Bay and Assistant Returning Officer Larry Nalungiaq of Kugaaruk will accept declarations of candidacy from eligible persons from

January 26 until 2pm Central time Friday January 30.



In order to be eligible to vote and be a candidate at a by-election, a person must be resident in the constituency in which the by-election will be held from the day of the writ in addition to the usual qualifications.



The by-election is needed as a result judicial recount following the December by-election

resulted in a tie between the top two candidates Steve Mapsalak and John Ningark.
