Liquor Plebiscites Date: 10/23/2009 On Monday October 26, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. voters in Pangnirtung and Rankin Inlet will cast ballots in liquor plebiscites. In Pangnirtung voting will take place at the Community Centre. Eligible Rankin Inlet residents will vote at Turaarvik Inns North. In Pangnirtung voters will be asked if they want to exchange their current system of prohibition for the establishment of an Alcohol Education Committee. Rankin Inlet voters will respond to two questions. The first ballot will ask if they want to eliminate the current regulation that prohibits buying and selling beer in the community. If approved by the voters this would affect the purchase of beer by organizations, not individuals. The second question asks voters if they want to give the Liquor Licensing Board the authority to grant dining room licenses in Rankin Inlet. Nunavummiut are encouraged to visit Elections Nunavut’s website, www.elections.nu.ca to see our video in Inuktitut and English or to download a brochure. At the October 19 advance votes 18 people cast ballots in Pangnirtung while 22 voted in Rankin Inlet. -30- For details contact: Elections Nunavut Liquor Management Ph: 800.267.4394 Ph: 645.8475 Fax: 800.269.1125 Fax: 645.3327 Info@elections.nu.ca sokpatauyak@gov.nu.ca |
