There will be no change in the liquor status of either Chesterfield Inlet or Taloyoak as a result of liquor plebiscites held today. Date: 12/13/2010 There will be no change in the liquor status of either Chesterfield Inlet or Taloyoak as a result of liquor plebiscites held today. The Minister of Finance having received a petition from more than 20 eligible voters ordered plebiscites to find out if the voters in Chesterfield Inlet wanted to end the Alcohol Education Committee’s authority to review and approve liquor orders and to learn if Taloyoak voters wanted the establishment of an Alcohol Education Committee. Voter turnout was high in Chesterfield Inlet. One hundred and twenty-one of one hundred and forty-five eligible voters cast a ballot. Forty-eight (40%) voted in favour of disbanding the AEC while 73 (60%) voted to keep it. In Taloyoak, two hundred and fifty-seven of four hundred and fifty-one eligible electors voted. One hundred and twenty-five (49%) were in favour of the establishment of an Alcohol Education Committee while one hundred and thirty-two (51%) were against. For change to occur in a community’s liquor status at least 60% of the valid votes cast must be in favour of the question. |
