The Chief Electoral Officer is an independent officer of the Legislative Assembly. This is a seven-year statutory appointment. The Chief Electoral Officer is appointed by the Commissioner of Nunavut on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly.

Chief Electoral Officer Issues Writ for Netsilik By-Election: February 8, 2016 in Taloyoak and Kugaaruk
The Chief Electoral Officer has issued a writ to the Returning Officer for the Netsilik Constituency to initiate a by-election. The by-election day will be February 8, 2016. The Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers will be accepting Declarations of Candidacy starting today and ending at 2p.m. local time, Friday January 8, 2016.
The Taloyoak Returning Office hours are 12-7pm each day. In Kugaaruk, the Assistant Returning Officer will accept declarations. You will be able to find the names and contact information for accepted candidates on our website www.elections.nu.ca as soon as they are confirmed. This will be posted under Find your constituency.
Any resident of Nunavut who is qualified to vote may be a candidate in this by-election. However, only qualified Nunavut voters who are residents of the Netsilik constituency on the day the Chief Electoral Officer issues the writ may vote in this by-election.
