The idea of having one organization that would manage all elections in Nunavut was first suggested shortly after 1999. It was seen as a way to create a consistent election management system; where district education authorities (DEA's), municipal councils and Members of the Legislative Assembly would all be elected using similar rules.
Elections Nunavut worked with communities and local and territorial agencies to create a legislative proposal (Bill 49) to bring local election rules into the Nunavut Elections Act. The Bill included new rules on when local elections would take place and makes Elections Nunavut responsible for overseeing those elections. The Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly in June 2017.
