Josie Okalik Eegeesiak removed from Iqaluit Centre Ballot

18/10/2008

Rankin Inlet, Nunavut - The RCMP have concluded their investigation into the complaint alleging that Josie Okalik Eegeesiak who is running as a candidate in Iqaluit Centre, was not eligible.

The results of the RCMP investigation show that she had moved back to Nunavut in December 2007. On the basis of the facts disclosed during the RCMP investigation, Ms. Eegeesiak is therefore ineligible to be a candidate in this election. To be eligible, the Nunavut Elections Act requires all candidates to have been resident in Nunavut since October 27, 2007.

The Chief Electoral Officer is proceeding to use the powers available under the Nunavut Elections Act to prevent further campaigning by Ms. Eegeesiak and to remove her from the ballot on election day. Any ballots that may have been cast for her so far at the advance voting and other early voting opportunities will not be considered valid and will not be counted in the final tabulation of votes for Iqaluit Centre.

The decision about whether or not to lay a charge lies with the RCMP.
