Judicial recount required in Akulliq By-election

RANKIN INLET, Nunavut - 78% of eligible voters in the constituency of Akulliq had voted by the 7pm closing this evening, but the residents of Kugaaruk and Repulse Bay will have to wait a while longer to be certain who will represent them in the Nunavut legislature.

Four candidates submitted declarations of candidacy after the writ was issued on November 10: Helena Malliki, Steve Mapsalak, John Ningark and Marius Tungilik.

When the results were tallied late this evening, Returning Officer Romeo Kopak announced that since there was a difference of less than 2% in the number of votes attained by the candidate who received the most votes, John Ningark and the next candidate Steve Mapsalak, a judicial recount would be required.

Results summary:
Helena Malliki 111
Steve Mapsalak 155
John Ningark 157
Marius Tungilik 38

Rejected ballots 6

Detailed results will be available by 12pm December 16 at www.elections.nu.ca.
