There will be four candidates vying for election as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the upcoming by-election in the constituency of Akulliq

RANKIN INLET, Nunavut - There will be four candidates vying for election as Member of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut in the upcoming by-election in the constituency of Akulliq.

At the deadline for submitting declarations of candidacy in Repulse Bay and Kugaaruk this afternoon Steve Mapsalak, Helena Malliki of Repulse Bay and Ovide Alakannuark and John Ningark of Kugaaruk  were accepted as candidates.

Any eligible voter at this by-election can vote in the office of the returning officer, located at the Hamlet Office in Repulse Bay from February 16 to February 26 or in the advance vote at the Hamlet in Kugaaruk on February 23. A mobile poll will be held in both communities on the morning of February 23 for housebound voters. On Election Day – March 2 polls will be open from 8am to 6pm in Kugaaruk and 9am to 7pm in Repulse Bay.

The by-election was called when a judicial recount of the results of the December 15, 2008 by-election found a tie between Steve Mapsalak and John Ningark.
