Ways to Vote

There are different ways to vote depending on your needs. Here is a list of all the ways Nunavummiut can vote in District Education Authority elections.Voting in the Commision scolaire francophone du Nunavut (CFSN) elections? Click here for more information.

Remember! You must be on the Voters List to vote. If you are not, you can be added when you go to vote. See Who Can Vote for information on the Voters List.

Regular Access

Polling Place in Your Community (on election day)

Election day hours:

  • 9 am to 7 pm (local time)

Office of the Returning Officer (before election day)

Available only in communities that are approved to have an Office of the Returning Officer.

  • Available for up to 10 days (from 14 days before to 4 days before election day)
  • Hours: 12 pm to 7 pm (local time)

Advance Vote (before election day)

Advanced Voting Hours:

Available in communities without an Office of the Returning Officer.

  • Available 1 day only (7 days before election day)
  • Hours: 12 pm to 7 pm (local time)

Special Access

Special (Mail-in) Ballot

For any voter who is away from home during the election, such as students, medical patients, and people in jail.

  1. Complete the Special Ballot Application Form. Email or fax it to us. (Do this as soon as you hear about the election so we can process your application in time).
  2. Once your application is approved, we will send you a mail-in ballot kit.
  3. Follow the directions and mail your completed ballot back to our office. It must reach the Elections Nunavut office in Rankin Inlet by 5 pm (local time) on election day.

Mobile Poll (brought to your home)

For any voter who cannot get to the local polling place easily, such as Elders, persons with disabilities, and their caregivers.

  • Contact your local Returning Officer or Elections Nunavut to schedule the Mobile Poll.
  • Voting date and hours of the Mobile Poll:
    • One day only – 7 days before election day
    • 9 am to 11:30 am (local time)

Emergency method

For voters in remote locations (such as mining camps and outpost camps) who cannot vote any other way, or voters who are away from their constituency because of an unexpected absence.

  • Contact Elections Nunavut to make arrangements to vote this way.
  • To vote this way, you must meet certain conditions:
    • You are already on the Voters List, and
    • You had no other way to vote before you went to a remote location, or
    • You have no other way to vote because of an unexpected absence.
